After 16 years, Fat Beats has announced the closing of the legendary label’s two remaining retail locations in New York and Los Angeles. Fat Beats will celebrate the legacies of the stores, which are scheduled to close in early September (New York: September 4th, Los Angeles: September 18th) by throwing a series of blow-out sales and tribute parties open to the public during their last weeks. Fat Beats’ longest running and most famed location is at 406 Avenue of the Americas in Manhattan. Since the 1994 opening of Fat Beats’ flagship retail location, hip-hop fans have traveled far and wide to visit the iconic store. With locations soon following in Los Angeles (7600 Melrose Ave.), Atlanta, Amsterdam, and Tokyo, the record stores were a place to experience hip-hop culture and its legacy, which became a global phenomenon. “The closing of Fat Beats is just like one of my friends passing away. They promoted vinyl at its highest degree for the culture of good music and that makes it more difficult to say goodbye,” says DJ Premier.I should have asked my job to pull out pre-tax dollars for Fat Beats back in the day; I used to EMPTY my pockets there on a weekly basis. The Fat Beats label and distro will live on, but the retail store is sadly no more. More on those “tribute parties” soon, but until then, long live Fat Beats!

MWM―Crystals & Lasers

Esprit creative et ambitieux, MWM (Matt W. Moore) s’est exilé un mois à Paris pour preparer, en partant de rien, sa première exposition solo dans la capital. Il a donc débarqué sans oeuvres, sans materiel et sans idée arrêtée pour sa prochaine série de toiles. Des idées qui sont vite venues ensuite, en se penchant rétrospectivement sur le temps passé à assimiler la culture française, explorer la ville lumière, ses couleurs vibrantes, sa géométrie exagérée et ses diverses architectures et modes.

La série “MWM : Crystals & Lasers” explore et célèbre la convergence de son dévouement à différentes disciplines du design et des arts graphiques. Les oeuvres ont été entièrement peintes à la bombe, l’un des outils favoris de Matt. Mais les designs sont très nets, et semblent presque être numériques tant ils sont de facture précise et détailléeUne tentative honnête et abstraite d’atteindre la meme profondeur et la meme géométrie abstraite que dans style “Vectorfunk” numérique. Chaque oeuvre a pour but de perdre l’oeil du spectateur dans des illusions optiques, et de le laisser distinguer le bas du haut, la gauche de la droite. Bienvenue dans le futur !

An ambitious creative spirit, MWM (Matt W. Moore) has traveled to Paris for one month to prepare, from scratch, for his first Paris Solo-Exhibition. He arrived with no art, no supplies, and no firm plan for this new series of canvas paintings. The ideas for the artworks have actualized while processing time spent absorbing French Culture, exploring this Mega-City, the vibrant colors, the exaggerated geometry, and the diverse architecture and fashion of Paris.

The “MWM : Crystals & Lasers” Series explores and celebrates the convergence of his dedication to various disciplines of design and fine art. The paintings were created entirely with spray paint, one of Matt’s favorite mediums. But the designs are very clean, and appear almost digital in their precise details and craft. An honest, analog attempt to achieve the same depth and abstract geometry of his digital “Vectorfunk” style. The goal with each work is to have the viewers eye fall into the piece and get lost in the optical illusions, trying to figure out what is up, down, left, and right. Welcome to the Future!
